LIHU‘E — At approximately 6:50 p.m. Thursday evening, an eastbound vehicle reportedly struck a white ford pickup truck driving westbound in a head-on collision.
The collision resulted in serious injuries for two Kaua‘i residents.
According to a preliminary police investigation, the collision occurred fronting the Kaua‘i Humane Society, when an eastbound sedan crossed the center line and hit an oncoming pickup truck.
Both the 36-year-old female driver of the sedan and the 69-year-old driver of the pickup were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. As of Friday morning, both patients were reported to be in stable condition.
The male driver of the truck got out of his vehicle after the accident and was “extremely wobbly,” according to one eye witness.
The female driver was sitting in her car after the vehicle, and complained of chest and hip pains, according to the witness.
Officers remained on scene for roughly four hours to conduct an investigation and assist with traffic control. The highway remained opened for most of the investigation, except for a period of roughly 30 minutes when both lanes were closed to allow the vehicles to be towed from the scene.
The incident caused significant traffic delays for motorists.
Police departed the scene at around 11:15 p.m.
