Greener than Green Energy
Regarding the article “Hawaiians say ‘NO’ to Green Energy” published March 11: It’s so refreshing to see a community stand up and say “NO” to a plantation done deal, even though there is no means of stopping billionaires in control of an entire island.
I salutes the Anahola community for their mettle and unity, as reported by TGI, in standing up to Green Energy Team LLC and its efforts to once again take away land from the indigenous population of Kaua‘i.
As Joe Borden said, “With this lease, even a blind man can see, we’ll never get our lands back.” He is correct: It happened in 1893 and it’s been happening ever since. It appears the Hawaiians prefer to hold on to their land and trees rather than embrace another “snake oil” presentation that will likely never benefit the community with cheaper electricity.
Every Kaua‘i resident knows when the price of any product goes up in Hawai‘i, it never goes back to a cheaper level.
What is truly curious is this new wood-chip burning bio-mass plant — designed and built by a German firm and financed by the German Deutsche Ban — would cost $90 million to generate only 6.7 megawatt-hours of electricity. That equals $13.5 million per mwh.
In 2008, I brought to Kaua‘i $130 million for a Municipal Recycling Facility to be built, hopefully, at our existing Kekaha Landfill.
This MRF facility would have taken care of 180 tons of household garbage picked up daily by the county, plus private sector paper and green waste, and used this waste to manufacture alternate fuel pellets, creating jobs. These pellets would be burned to create 30 mwh of electricity at a lower cost than KIUC could produce: garbage to electricity!
This MRF facility would have produced 4.4 times more energy at a cost 3.1 times cheaper than the $90 million German deal. Plus, the MRF would have eliminated more than 85 percent of Kauai’s garbage. Perhaps we residents would not need to build another high cost landfill. This technology is still an alternative. Something to think about.
Unfortunately, neither our council, mayor nor KIUC wished to discuss this proposal.
They listen only to billionaires; we are not billionaires.

Are you ready for the next war?
Congress is gearing up for war with Iran. U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono is a co-sponsor of Senate Resolution 65, which calls for stronger sanctions against Iran. The resolution does explicitly say that the use of military force is not authorized, but it is strongly worded in support of Israel.
Basically, it is a signal to Israel that the U.S. will support an attack on Iran.
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is a co-sponsor of House Resolution 850 — Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013.
While preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is admirable, it is not going to be accomplished by hitting them on the head with a stick.
War with Iran will be the result. Our corporatocracy wants this war so they can profit on the weapons.
Take a stand against war.

Another example of nanny state
Why does our government constantly punish the innocent along with the guilty? House Bill 854 is doing just that!
Gov. Neil Abercrombie is proposing a fee on sugar-sweetened drinks with the idea that this will offset obesity-related medical expenditures.
Why just drinks, why not double tax everything that causes obesity? This is a double tax because we already pay a tax when we buy food.
And how will that be determined since it isn’t what, but how much we consume that makes us obese?
This is another example of the nanny-state run amok!
Where the people running our government believe they know better than we do how to run our lives?
And what will be next when this proves not to work? Will they then decide how big our pizzas can be or how many M&Ms come in a bag?
This is just like punishing all gun owners for the few that can’t control themselves, why should the healthy be punished along with the ones that can’t control their calorie intake!?
