Koleka Chow and Marissa Layosa each netted six points to lead Team Lihu‘e Red, Girls Division 2 team, to a 28-21 edge over the Seacats, who despite all kinds of problems, prevailed for its 21 points led by Cambria Ort getting a dozen points and Risa Whetsel adding four points.
Karen Matsumoto, the scorekeeper for the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association who assists the county in the youth basketball league, said the Seacats started out with a short bench with two players absent and one having to leave at the half to play in a soccer game. Additionally, the Seacats dropped another two players in the second half to fouls. But despite the problems, Matsumoto said this was one of the Seacats’ best games in the league.
Team Lihu‘e Black, which got eight points from Cierra Tanicala during last week’s outing, did not fare as well, dropping to the Kamikaze, 36-25.
Monique Tomacder and Sheryl Ann Tomas took the lead for the Kamikaze, dropping 11 points apiece followed by Sandrea Chung adding eight points and Kalia Shimabukuro finishing with seven points.
Matsumoto said the county youth basketball and KYBA will host the Dennis Agena and Kalakaua Basketball clinic starting Monday with more than 65 students registered for the three-day camp at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
The clinics, however, will not slow the game schedule as the Boys Division 3 teams take the floor, Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
