WAILUA — There was a line of people waiting to make their milkshakes last week at the recently reopened Rainbow Gas Mart in Wailua, said Mailelani Cox.
But those who missed out on the treat will have to wait two weeks to try the novelty — the do-it-yourself milkshake was so popular from the get-go that the store ran out of supplies in less than a week.
The gas station is at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Haleilio Road, and adjacent to the Kinipopo Shopping Village, reopened its doors March 11, following a month of renovation work.
“We were closed from Feb. 10 until March 10 for renovations, which was planned for,” Cox said. “Even while we were closed, people kept coming in and we had to explain our temporary shutdown.”
Renovations included updating the interior of the mini mart, including the installation of a f’real blending bar where shoppers can select from a variety of milkshakes, smoothies or frozen coffees.
Cox said the machine is the first to be installed in Hawai‘i, and after only two days since opening her stock levels dwindle considerably.
“The supplier said they’re running out, too,” Cox said. “They’re thinking of doing a special rush order to accommodate the demand.”
Cox said using the f’real blending bar is pretty straightforward: You select a flavor, punch in the consistency after placing the selection in the blending cup, and the machine does the rest.
Customers wanting to sample the new item have been surprised at the line.
