‘ELE‘ELE — Rescue officials have confirmed Kaua‘i’s eighth ocean drowning Thursday night off Glass Beach in ‘Ele’ele, when a man died while spear fishing with friends.
According to a preliminary police report, John-Eric Parinas, 35, of ‘Ele‘ele, was diving in waters off Glass Beach at around 9 p.m., when he apparently experienced a muscle cramp and attempted to make his way to shore.
While walking along a rock ledge, the man was reportedly swept away by waves. Friends then located him underwater and brought his unresponsive body to shore and performed CPR while awaiting medical assistance.
Firefighters located the victim down a rocky cliff and navigated through rough surf to carry him out of the area on a Stokes litter. Medics then transported him to Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
This is Kaua‘i’s tenth overall drowning for 2013, and its eighth ocean drowning.
