Saved at Secret Beach
I want to write to you today to tell the island of Kaua‘i that a good Samaritan saved my life at Secret Beach. I want to thank Ted for having the strength, courage and knowledge of the ocean to fearlessly swim out to me and bring me back to my wife on shore. If it wasn’t for him, my lack of common sense could have made our vacation in paradise a nightmare. Ted informed me that there have been several drownings on Kaua‘i this year, so I want to warn visitors of the extreme dangers the ocean can pose. If you are not a strong swimmer please stay out of the water!
I will never forget what Ted did for me today. Please respect the ocean, beaches and the people who enjoy them daily.

Waters claim lives all over the world
Contrary to Ms. Beck’s belief, the waters in the Hawai‘i are no more dangerous than any other place in the world. The California and Oregon coasts, the Rouge River and other waters are continually claiming lives every day. We are not the most intelligent species on the planet. No amount of teaching seems to increase our common sense.

Are you proud to be an American?
I look back at the times I was proud of America, and the one that stands out the most is, of course, when Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon. I was so proud that buttons were bursting off my shirt. But at the same time, I was in complete awe at the ingenuity of the human being. It was important to me that an American was the one to make that step. It was much more important to me that any human was there at all.
NASA continues the exploration of space, and it has made enormous strides in showing us the mysteries of the universe.
But there is no one there.
Don’t pretend you don’t understand. You may be a bit confused to hear a truth so bluntly stated, but give yourself a second, and you will understand.
What has America done since then?
Bombed Vietnam. Bombed Panama. Bombed Beirut. Bombed some dinky island in the Caribbean that no on knows the name of to cover up the bombing of Beirut. Bombed Iraq. Bombed Iraq a second time. Bombed Afghanistan.
Why can’t I be an American proud of the things we build, the adventures we have, the lives we save and the liberty we serve, rather than have to be ashamed that we can beat up the little guy on the block?
