LIHU‘E — The Garden Isle Artisan Fair is nine years old and is now the kick-off event for the Prince Kuhio Celebration from Saturday to March 30. The Artisan Fair will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
LIHU‘E — The Garden Isle Artisan Fair is nine years old and is now the kick-off event for the Prince Kuhio Celebration from Saturday to March 30.
The Artisan Fair will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manokalanipo Park, or also known as Po‘ipu Beach Park, at the intersection of Po‘ipu and Ho‘one roads. The event is free and open to the public.
The Artisan Fair is an opportunity to see a wealth of local talent, including more than 40 of the island’s fine artisans. There will be photography, jewelry, aloha wear, wood carvings, lauhala baskets, pounded mulberry bark, original oil paintings, table linens and more.
“This is all quality handcrafted and handmade items,” said Judy Webb, event coordinator and member of the nonprofit Garden Isle Artisan Fair.
Heifara, a Tahitian drum-maker, will perform on drums and a traditional nose flute. Cultural artifacts and a Prince Kuhio exhibit will be presented at the Historical Table.
Traditional refreshments will include local plate lunches and shave ice. There will also be pounded mulberry bark, passion fruit and assorted jellies.

The Prince Kuhio Rodeo follows on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the stables about 1.5 miles east of the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa. The rodeo is free and sponsored by the West Kaua‘i Rodeo Association.
The event includes barrel racing and plenty of other activities. There is also free pony rides for the keiki. For information call 639-6695.
The Prince Kuhio events continue on Sunday at the National Tropical Botanical Garden with Wisdom of the Kupuna from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4425 Lawa‘i Road in Koloa. The event is free and open to the public.
The Wisdom of the Kupuna is taken from the Hawaiian proverb ‘Olelo No‘eau. Elders will explain the native plants and Hawaiian cultural knowledge.
The event is an opportunity to walk the gardens and see some of the most beautiful areas of Kaua‘i. The garden is across from Spouting Horn. For information call 742-2433.
