KALAHEO — Ardino Nedd bucketed two of his 18 points in the first five seconds of overtime Monday night during the county’s Boys Division 3 basketball games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The overtime bucket proved to be the margin of victory for the Hanapepe Sinister, who held off a tenacious Westside Basketball for a 49-47 edge in overtime.
Team Central proved to be stronger than Team Lihu‘e as the Central Silver posted a 45-17 win over Lihu‘e Red, and Central Black was led by Marty Lacierna and Kaimi Texeira in its 52-11 win over Lihu‘e Black.
The seesaw battle between Hanapepe Sinister and Westside Basketball saw the lead exchange throughout the game, neither team being able to solidly lock up the match.
D.J. Pabre topped the evening with a game-high 23 points, including two treys in the fourth period, but the effort came up short in the clutch when Pabre was held scoreless in the fifth, sixth and overtime periods.
Hanapepe, chasing a five-point deficit in the sixth period, pulled the game to a 47-47 deadlock with 48 seconds remaining when Reymund Mondoza, finishing with 17 points, sealed a plus-one play.
As both teams scrambled for ball control, the Hanapepe red shirts appeared in the driver’s seat with control staying on its side of the court.
But none of the balls dropped, forcing the overtime as the Central Silver and Lihu‘e Red boys crowded the sidelines.
Similar to the final seconds of regulation, Hanapepe controlled the tipoff, Nedd coming up the leftside for a quick layup and the digit advantage.
From that point, it was another struggle for ball control, the Sinister, holding on to the ball for the two-minute OT.
Nedd finished with high-point honors for Hanapepe with 18 points, including 12 points coming in the second half followed by Mendoza ending with 17 points. Tai Ofisa added four second-half points, Keaka Wisneski and Lacin Montemayor, playing up from the Division 2 league, each bucketed a three-ball in the second period. Pairs from Naikoa Simao, Kai Perreira-Alquiza rounded out the win.
Following Pabre’s lead, Carter Koetje dropped nine points, including seven in the fifth period and a number of boards. Joel Soriano finished with seven points, including a trey in the second period, Zech Ponting added four points with pairs from Ian Malabe and T.J. Apilado rounding out the Westside Basketball effort.
Michael Dasalla put away 13 points and Thomas Yam added 11 points to lead Central Silver to its 45-17 win over Lihu‘e Red, which got five points from A.J. Apalla and four points from Shaun Paglinawan.
Texeira dropped in 13 points and Lacierna added 12 points with Joseph Cumlat adding eight points to lead Central Black to its 52-11 win over Lihu‘e Black, which got three points apiece from Kaleo Neves and David Pascua.
The Boys Division 3 next take the floor Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with three games starting at 6 p.m.
Lepo Ula will open against Team Lihu‘e Red in the 6 p.m. tipoff followed by Team Central Black taking on Hanakila in the 7 p.m. match. Team Central Silver closes the night against Westside Basketball at 8 p.m.
