Skip the processed meat
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. But while the focus is on prevention through screening, the discussion is missing one of the main causes: processed meat. Most people don’t realize that they might actually be putting cancer-causing carcinogens in their sandwich or on their kid’s pizza.
Numerous studies connect processed meat with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research have discovered such a strong link between processed meat and colorectal cancer that they determined processed meat should never be consumed. Eating even one hot dog per day can increase your risk of colorectal cancer by 21 percent, yet Americans bought more than 700 million packages of hot dogs in 2011.
While the horsemeat and pink slime scandals have made consumers nationwide gag, the saturated fat, preservatives and carcinogens in processed meat can make them terminally sick. Skip processed meat not just in March, but every day.

Thinking about PV ?
I applaud Douglas Wilmore’s letter on March 4, but I would like to shine a little more light on the subject of photovoltaics installation.
Kaua‘i is currently experiencing a boom in solar installation. This is a wonderful trend. But in the rush to sell PV systems, some home owners are skipping over some of the most important first steps.
The buyer needs to be aware of regulatory, utility and legislative changes that all may affect future residential and commercial PV systems. Call KIUC first to maximize your investment.
For instance, does KIUC need to upgrade their transformer to handle the planned system and charge the customer for this?

Before you simply ask your friends, I would hope you get the facts first. It will save you a lot of time and money.
I encourage everyone to convert to solar hot water as the first step in saving energy and money. Then Solar PV can be considered.

Stop the spending madness
This is in response to several recent The Garden Island news articles outlining the possible effects of the federal government budget cuts to Hawai‘i.
Notice lately that your president is campaigning around the country for support because of those “damn Republicans” not seeing things his way and voted to stop him with his bad habit of mad spending?
Welcome to the Mad Max world that President Obama envisions. It is a scenario designed to provoke fear, rage, and hopelessness, and it certainly does, though not for the reasons your president intends.
He is making every effort he can to instruct all government departments to make life as miserable as possible for the people of this country.
His spreading of scare tactics of the country collapsing certainly reveals the utter futility of believing he will ever save America from financial disaster.
I see it as a guarantee that our nation is headed for ruin unless government cuts the escalating spending it has so enjoyed.
Your president has done nothing to stop it. In fact, he constantly argues we need to spend more.
Instead of working with the Republicans and finding ways to do with less (like most hard working tax paying families do), your president resorts to his scare tactics and smears and for that he’s late to his tee off with Tiger Woods.
It’s your presidents driving force of believing that government needs more money from our wallets and that we must pay more taxes or as he puts it “their fare share.”
Have you checked your paycheck lately? I would like just one family in this country to show us how they can continue to run their household expenses like your president and his administration runs our country and not eventually lose everything you have worked your butt’s off for.
Amen, to those who have stood up and voted to stop the continuing madness of your president.
