LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School split its series against Waimea, and Kapa‘a High School split its series against Island School Saturday when the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opened its tennis season.
Kapa‘a, hosting Island School at the Warrior facility in Kapa‘a, edged out the Voyagers, 3-2 in the boys’ matches while Island School took a 3-2 win over the Warrior wahine on the girls’ courts.
Kaua‘i, hosting Waimea High School at the Kaua‘i Lagoons tennis courts, squeezed out a 3-2 edge on the girls’ courts while Waimea edged out the Red Raiders, 3-2 on the boys’ courts.
Kaua‘i No. 1 boys singles player Jerik Centeno went to a tie-breaker to get past Waimea’s Bradley Cano, 6-3, 7-6(4) and a three-set match in the Boys Third Doubles gave Kaua‘i its second win when the duo of Mitchell Evans and Clinton Sibolboro defeated Waimea’s Riley Saiki and Bryson Cayaban, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
Waimea’s Marcus Pereira defeated Francis Mathew Perez, 6-0, 6-0 in the Boys Second Singles and the Menehune pair of Kaleo Huata and Gilson Guillermo defeated Kaua‘i’s William Jordan Balbin and Randy Iloreta, 6-4, 6-2 in the Boys First Doubles.
Waimea’s Brad Lumabao and Patrick Cowell, playing on the Boys Second Doubles court, was victorious over Kaua‘i’s Regie Negrillo and Thomas Simpkins, 7-5, 6-1.
On the girls’ courts, Waimea’s Brittney Barreira, playing the Girls First Singles, defeated Tarryn Orial, 6-2, 6-1 and the Waimea first doubles pair of Shay Jim and Kaycee San Agustin-Nordmeier went to three sets to defeat the Kaua‘i duo of Danika Thompson and Kari Noe, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Noelani Murray of Kaua‘i, playing the Girls Second Singles court, downed Waimea’s Emily Evans, 6-0, 6-3.
The Red Raider pair of Dyann Layaoen and Stefanie Gushikuma, playing on the Girls Second Doubles court, went to three sets to defeat Waimea’s pair of Caylee Yamamoto and Kim Hoeckman-Percival, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Maricar Besamira and Tori Pagador, wearing the Kaua‘i red on the Girls Third Doubles court, defeated Kayla Ishida and Kylah Gruspe, 6-1, 6-3.
Kapa‘a went to its strength in the doubles courts for its wins, the Lady Warriors getting its two wins in the Second and Third Doubles while the boys corralled its three wins on the First, Second and Third Doubles field.
Island School girls’ April Oo opened with a win on the First Girls First Singles court with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kiara Tamayose while on the Girls Second Singles floor, Alex Obert defeated Nani Brun, 6-1, 6-2.
During the Girls First Doubles, Island School’s pair of Katy Davidson and Michaela Fitzgerald hung on to defeat Kapa‘a duo of Karalee Higa and Taylor Anama, 7-6(5) and 7-5.
Kapa‘a’s Casey Nakamura paired with Amber Diaz on the Girls Second Doubles court to go three sets in defeating the Voyager pair of Madison Moore and Whitney Summerhays, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Cassidy Yatsko of Kapa‘a teamed with Franses Nono on the Girls Third Doubles Court to defeat Ashley Larkin and Alyssa Medd, 6-0, 6-1.
On the exhibition courts, Kapa‘a’s Wylie Barker and Taylor Ochoa defeated Christina Schempers and Savanah Tripoli, 6-3, while the Warrior pair of Chelsea Ferrer and Angelika Questin downed Genevieve Foster and Amber Hopkins, 6-0.
Island School picked up its two wins on the Boys singles courts, Davis Huffman, playing the Boys First Singles, downing Kai Harrison, 6-0, 6-4.
Manix Wolman of Island School worked harder for his win on the Boys Second Singles, edging out Kailer DiBona in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Kapa‘a picked up its three wins on the Boys Doubles courts, the pair of Matt Steinhort and Kalani Murakami, playing the First Doubles, downing Island Schools’ Keoni Boemer and Eric Potter, 6-1, 6-2.
The Warriors’ Noah Plemer and Kenji Matsuda defeated Sam Goldberg and Charlie Hernot, 6-1, 6-2 on the Boys Second Doubles court and Jonathan Obiano and Don Maddock teamed to beat Island Schools’ Quentin Allen and Zeb Wichert, 6-2, 6-2 in Third Doubles.
Kapa‘a’s Cydney Sitzler teamed with Gavin Bryan to defeat Island Schools’ Braden Myrks, 6-1, 6-0 in an exhibition match.
Kapa‘a next travels to the Kaua‘i Lagoons to meet Kaua‘i Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Waimea will travel to the Kaua‘i Community College courts to meet Island School in matches starting at noon.
