LIHU‘E —Space is still available for the Kaua‘i Museum children’s lei workshop, which will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kaua‘i Museum courtyard.
Keiki La Lei Workshop is intended to teach children how to make lei using two of six different lei-making methods, including kui (to string); kipu‘u (knotted); wili (twisted); humu papa (sewn on a backing); hili (plaited); or haku (braided).
The preparation comes ahead of the annual Kaua‘i Museum May Day Lei Contest where organizers are anxious to have keiki enter the competition.
The contest is scheduled for May 4.
Happy Tamanaha, an award-winning lei maker, will be joined by her husband, Kats, and other local lei makers to lead the classes, which run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for the first session that covers kui, kipu‘u and wili style of lei.
The second session runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will cover humu papa, hili and haku style of lei.
There is a fee of $5 per family and participants can select no more than two workshops. Participants must provide their own lei materials and children must be accompanied by an adult.
