KALAHEO — Lepo Ula’s Kelly Ragasa spoiled Team Central’s hopes for a sweep Monday night during the county’s Division 3 Boys basketball games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
After trailing Team Central Black 2-6 following the first period, Lepo Ula came back to tie the match in three periods, including the final period to force overtime, where Ragasa launched the winning bucket in the 34-32 win. It was the first period where Lepo Ula held an advantage in the game.
Keoni Gaoiron topped the Lepo Ula scoring with eight points followed by Ragasa and Kicah Acoba each netting six points in the overtime win.
Joseph Cumlat finished with a game-high 15 points to lead the Team Central Black effort, followed by Bryce Johnson-Cormack adding six points.
Earlier in the evening, Team Central Silver got 14 points from Thomas Yam and 13 points from Michael Dasalla in its 55-18 win over the Hanapepe Sinister.
Both Yam and Dasalla spread their scoring over the first half, Yam marking 12 of his 14 points, including 10 in the second period when Team Central Silver exploded for 22 points to pull ahead 26-10 following a 5-4 first quarter deficit.
Dasalla popped eight points in the second period and dropped a bucket in the third for his 10-point first half. He launched a three-ball in the sixth, the only trey marked by Team Central Silver, for his game total.
The Hanapepe Sinister marked three treys, one by Naikoa Simao in the fourth frame, which was his only score. Ardino Nedd added two, one each in the first and second periods, toward his game-total nine points. Reymund Mendoza balanced his four points between the halves.
Papalina relied on the three-ball to pull ahead of Team Lihu‘e 35-15 in the opener. Papalina ended with four treys, two coming from Gunnar Burkman, who ended with high-point honors with eight points. Trey Taba launched a three-ball in the second period en route to his game-total five points and Rhylen Yadao-Purisima notched a trey in the opening period, his only score.
Noah Sasil joined Burkman with eight points, Brayden Miyamoto, Travis Miguel and Braden Pagador joined Yadao-Purisima with three points apiece.
Team Lihu‘e fired off just one trey by Jasper Jacinto to help him net high-point honors at 11 points. David Pascua netted a bucket in the opening period for his pair and Ryan Mones got a second period pair.
The Division 3 boys take the floor Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center when the Hanapepe Sinister host Hanakila in the 6 p.m. opener followed by the Kaua‘i Ballers 1 taking on Team Central Black at 7 p.m. and the Kaua‘i Ballers 2 take on Team Central Silver starting at 8 p.m.
