LIHU‘E — Rescue specialists are actively searching Kalihiwai waters on Kaua‘i’s North Shore, where two swimmers were reportedly swept to sea — one was rescued and sent to the hospital, but the other is still missing.
According to preliminary reports, two males were walking the rocky shoreline at around 11:30 a.m. today in an area between Kalihiwai Bay and Kauapea Beach, commonly known as Secret Beach, when they were swept into the ocean by high surf.
Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded along with Engine 1, Truck 1, lifeguards on jet ski and Kaua‘i Police Department, according to a county press release.
Air 1 located one of the two victims, a 47-year-old male, and airlifted him to Kalihiwai Beach where awaiting medics transported him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
According to scanner chatter, the swimmer was rescued on the rocks, and was short of breath and had lacerations on his head.
The search continues now for the second male victim. His identity is unknown at this time, county officials said.
Scanner chatter indicates that a body was seen floating about 100 yards offshore, but no further information was available at the time of this posting.
The Coast Guard joined the search, according to scanner chatter.
Updates on the incident will be given as information becomes available.
