NININI — Rescue personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and officers with the Kaua‘i Police Department are continuing a search for a missing man in the area surrounding Ninini Beach this morning.
The air, land and sea-based search began at around 8:30 p.m. last night when a local man did not return home after reportedly exercising near Ninini Beach earlier that day. He was last heard from at around noon Tuesday and may have been swimming at the time of his disappearance.
The man’s identity has not yet been released.
The Coast Guard responded last night with two vessels and a helicopter, which continued an aerial search throughout the night.
A full team of rescuers resumed the effort at first light this morning with Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 and Radon 1, the fire department’s rescue boat. Kaua‘i police is supporting the rescue effort with officers conducting a land-based search along the shoreline, from Ahukini to Nawiliwili.
The Coast Guard is also expected to continue an aerial search today.
According to the National Weather Service, a high surf advisory continues through 6 p.m. today for all east facing shores with strong tradewinds expected to create rough surf and large breaking waves along the shoreline.
Officials urge all beachgoers to swim within seeing distance of a lifeguard tower and when in doubt, don’t go out.
