John Vales
John Richard Vales of California passed away on February 24, 2012 in California at the age of 74. Born on December 28, 1938 in California, he was a machinist.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Vales, Jr.; and daughter, Mary Vales.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Vales; wife, Blanca Vales; sibling, Dolores Hatch; children, Mary Vales, Patty Vales, Leilani Vales, and Diana Vales; and 3 grandchildren.
A service will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at St. Raphael, Koloa. Viewing will begin at 10:00 am with service to follow on 11:00 am.
Family suggests casual attire.
There will be no flowers accepted at this time.
Rudy Alao
Rudy R. Alao of Kalaheo, Kauai passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2013 at the age of 59. He was born on July 12, 1953 in Lihue, Kauai. He was a retired scale attendant with the County of Kauai and an Air Force Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Zoilo Alao, and Rosella Kuarom Alao; and sister, Peggy Alao Basuel.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Silva Alao of Kalaheo; sons, Jensen and Gerald Alao, both of Kalaheo; brothers, Dennis Alao, Larry (Penny) Alao, Eric (Jeri) Alao, Quintin (Nicole) Alao, Gaivin (Gemma) Alao, and Vince (Essie) Alao; sisters, Lydia (John) Schornach, Rena (Blu) Ulanday, Janise (Kevin) Gusman, Norma Alao, and Zelda (Nolan) Alvarado; father and mother-in-law, Charles “Joe” Silva and Lillian Muraoka Silva; brother-in-law, Charlie (Della) Silva, sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Ronnie) Dotario, Theresa (George) Castillo, Bonnie (Mala) Lanning, and Lynn (Teddy) Perreira; and extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation will start at 9:00 am with mass to be celebrated at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at the Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery in Hanapepe.
The family suggests casual or aloha attire. Donation may be made in lieu of flowers to Kauai Hospice.

Julia Nabeshima
Julia Nabeshima of Kaumakani, Kauai, passed away on February 10, 2013 at home at the age of 77. Born on January 25, 1936 in Makaweli, Kauai, she was a Nurse with Kauai Veteran’s Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isidro and Carmenlina Buduan; brother, Charles; sister, PaulineBonwell; and grandparent, Leon Asignar.
She is survived by her husband, Genzo Nabeshima; sons, Philip Nabeshima of Hanapepe, Raynard (Dawn) Nabeshima of Oahu, and Neil (Marlene) Nabeshima Sr. of Kaumakani; daughter, Danette (Clinton) Fujii of Lihue; brothers, Stanley (Bob) Buduan, and Roy (Loyd) Buduan, both of Hanapepe Heights, Dennis (Ofelia)Buduan of Kaumakani, Leon (Lynette) Buduan and Louie (Chang-e) Buduan, both of Oregon; sisters, Gail (Gil) Agular of San Diego, and Charmane (Henry) Chu of Maui; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; an uncle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai, with visitation from 9am to 11am, and service at 11am..

Coleen Rivera
Coleen Ruth Apuna Rivera, 62, of Kahakuloa, Maui, passed away on February 19, 2013 at her residence. She was born on May 4, 1950 in Honolulu.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Paulita Apuna; brothers, Robert “Bobby” Enfield, and Neil Apuna Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Rivera Sr.; daughter, Michele (Tracy) Rivera Spacek; sons, Ronald (Russandra) Rivera Jr., and Brannon (Leilah) Rivera; brothers, Donald Hoopii, Andrew Apuna Jr., Nathan Apuna, Reggie Apuna, and Kealoha Apuna; sisters, Eileen Vidinha, Rhonda Tandal, Andrea “Sweetie” Hamasaki, Bernadette Janicki, and Bernardine Cypher; and 16 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Ballard Family Mortuary, memorial services will begin at 5 p.m.
Memorial services will also be held on the islands of Oahu and Kauai at a later date.

Owen Stanley Esona
Owen Stanley Esona of Bend, Oregon, formerly of Kapaa, Kauai, passed away on January 29, 2013 in Bend, Oregon at the age of 63. Born on April 21, 1949 in Waimea, Hawaii, he was the Owner of Esona Nursery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph H.K. Alapai, Sr. and Hilda Bansole Arcangel; and step-father, Leoncio Esona.
He is survived by his daughter, Rowena (Matthew) O’Brien; granddaughter, Kaileia of Chicago; brothers, Steven (Edna) Esona of Wahiawa, Leonard (Yolanda) Esona, Sr. of Las Vegas, Alvin (Agatha) Esona of Waipahu; step-brothers, Joseph Alapai, Jr. Edward Alapai, Duane Alapai; step-sisters, Ahmoi Kawamura, and Kealoha Rita; and numerous uncles, aunties, nieces, and nephews.
Private Services will be held for immediate family only. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life for Owen S. Esona on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the new Kapaa Sports Pavilion at 13:30 pm; located across the Kapaa Armory.

Caridad Batulayan
Caridad Erice Batulayan passed away on February 14, 2013 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Born on September 2, 1930 in the Philippines, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Batulayan
She is survived by her sons, William (Virginia) Batulayan Jr. and Wilson Batulayan, both of Kapaa; daughters, Carwilia (Rustico) Damaso of Kapaa, Visitacion (Villamor) Ibanez of Kapaa and Modesta (Mario) Baldovino of Kapaa; sisters, Juanita E. Castillo, Leonarda E. (Victor) Batulayan, and Martina E. Kabigting; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 9am to 11am, in Kapaa All Saints’ Episcopal Church, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.

Gail Paris
Gail Ann Paris of Kapaa passed away at home on February 21, 2013, at the age of 72. She was born in Utah on February 9, 1941, and was employed as a real estate agent with Century 21.
She is survived by her son, David (Ellen) Carscadden of Kapaa; daughter, Kimberly Lugar of California; 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Garth Jones of Utah; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lydgate Park Pavillion.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Unity Church, Kauai Humane Society or Kauai Hospice.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Nancy K. Morgan
Nancy Kathleen Morgan passed away on February 11, 2013 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 91. She was born on June 1, 1921 in Los Angeles, California.
She is survived by her sons, James Morgan III of San Diego, Calif. and Christopher Morgan of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughters, Dafri Estes of Snowmass Village, Colorado and Melissa Hatef of La Crescenta, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Koloa at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Adeline Pereira of Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii passed away on February 21, 2013 at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 87. Born on August 5, 1925 in Makaweli, Kauai, she was a homemaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christina De Costa; husband, Charles Pereira, Sr.; daughter, Adeline Pereira; sons, John and George Pereira.
She is survived by sons, Charles (Vivian) Pereira, Jr., Patrick (Leah) Pereira, Anthony (Carolyn) Pereira, and Steven (Reni) Pereira; daughters, Adele (Gordon) Mattos, Mary Solecki, and Kathleen (Stephen) Miguel, Jr.; brothers, William (Dolores) De Costa, George De Costa, Robert (Bernice) De Costa; sister, Christina Vidinha, Diane Abordo; 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
