LIHU‘E — Mokihana Aquatics swimmer Zoe Carvalho, 8, will be experiencing her first-ever swim meet this weekend — in Hilo.
Five Mokihana Aquatics swimmers, including Carvalho, will be participating in the Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto ABC Meet Saturday and Sunday at the “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium on the Big Island.
“We have five swimmers going to the meet, and three of them will be in their first ‘big’ meet,” said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya. “For Zoe, this is her very first meet, ever.”
Carvalho will be swimming in eight events over the two days of the Kawamoto meet.
Joining her, Leigh Idica, 7, will also be swimming eight events; Chloe Inouye, 6, will be swimming in eight events, including two first-time events, the girls’ 25-yard butterfly and the girls’ 25-yard backstroke.
Alana “Kawehi” Tamashiro, 12, who won Swimmer of the Month honors for both January and February, will be competing in seven events, all of which she holds Hawai‘i A time standards.
Her slate includes the 100-yard fly, the 50-yard breaststroke, the 50-yard Backstroke, the 100-yard individual medley, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle.
Jake Valenti, 9, rounds out the Mokihana contingent as the sole boy in the group.
He will swim eight events, including first-time swims in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke and the boys’ 50-yard fly.
