The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the first of three Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative 2013 Board of Directors candidate forums today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Community College, Office of Continuing Education and Training Building, Room 106.
Wednesday’s forum, hosted in partnership with the Lihu‘e Business Association, will feature the six KIUC Board of Directors candidates, including Carol Bain, Stewart “Stu” Burley, Allan Smith, John “Jack” Benzie, Jonathan Jay and Jan TenBruggencate.
Admission to the forums is free and Pat Griffin, president of the Lihu‘e Business Association, said this is a great opportunity for people to meet the candidates.
Questions for the candidates have been prepared by Apollo Kaua‘i, the L.B.A. and the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce.
The forum will be broadcast live on KKCR radio and on a tape delay on Ho‘ike Community Television.
In addition to the Wednesday forum, the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce has two other community forums scheduled in partnership with various community organizations.
On March 6, a candidate forum will be held at the Church of the Pacific, and on March 13, in partnership with the County of Kaua‘i, the final candidate forum will be held at the Waimea Neighborhood Center.
The deadline to vote for the three candidates who will be on the KIUC board is noon on March 23, according to a flier from the KIUC.
People can vote for the three candidates in one of three ways: online, by telephone, or by returning the mailed ballot. The traditional ballot can either be mailed, or delivered to the locked ballot box located in the lobby of the KIUC offices, located at 4463 Pahe‘e Street, Suite 1, in Lihu‘e.
The KIUC Nominating Committee confirmed six candidates for three seats on its Board of Directors election on March 23, according to a KIUC release.
Two candidates, Jay and Benzie, submitted petitions containing the signatures of at least 35 members of the cooperative. Benzie was also nominated by the Nominating Committee, along with Burley and incumbent directors Bain, Smith and TenBruggencate.
A director is one of nine elected representatives of the members of KIUC who, collectively, constitute the KIUC Board of Directors. The board governs the business of KIUC and sets the strategic direction and policies of the cooperative. It is not involved in day-to-day operations.
