NAWILIWILI — The U.S. Coast Guard, aided by Kaua‘i Fire Department, searched late into the night for a man last seen at Running Waters beach near the Ninini Point Lighthouse.
The man, whom county officials did not identify, apparently went for a run and then a swim in the area sometime Tuesday afternoon, according to information heard on police, fire and Coast Guard radio.
His cooler was located on the beach by firefighters shortly after dark.
Two Coast Guard vessels were conducting an ocean-based search and firefighters from Engine 3 and Truck 3 were conducting a shoreline search using night-vision binoculars, county officials said.
Surf in the area was much bigger than normal thanks to the tradewind swell.
