The Kapa‘a High School boys’ basketball team will be unseeded when it opens the Hawaiian Airlines Hawai‘i High School Division II boys basketball state championships Thursday on O‘ahu.
The Warriors, under head coach Phil Baclayon, earned its fifth straight Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation last week by coming back against Kaua‘i High School before an overflow enthusiastic audience during a playoff last week. The playoff win also moved the Warriors to the state championships.
They’ll start their bid for the title against No. 4 seeded Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in the quarterfinals.
Saint Francis is the top seed for the Division II followed by Kailua, with No. 3 seed going to Seabury Hall.
Also participating in the Division II tournament are Wai‘anae, Pahoa and University High.
Top seed in Division I is Maryknoll with Kalaheo getting the nod for No. 2 seed. King Kekaulike is the No. 3 seed and Konawaena of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation is the No. 4 seed.
Other schools participating in the Division I, which starts play Wednesday, include Baldwin, Kapolei, Moanalua, Pearl City, Kamehameha Schools-Big Island, Mililani, Punahou and Farrington.
The championship game for Division II is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu followed by the Division I title game starting at 7 p.m.
