Foolish spending goes on
A formal, official examination and verification on the money spent on bike path needed? An audit?
In my last letter to the people of Kaua‘i I told them how I helped build the bike route that parallels most of the highway around our island.
I expressed my opinion that this new multi-million dollar pathway being pushed by those in power for the benefit of maybe 1 percent of our total population, a duplication of the other one that was basically abandoned due to lack of use, was a huge waste of money, time and our resources.
And now we find that our tax dollars are being further squandered by putting 20,000-pound slabs of cement along the Wailua Beach corridor supposedly being removed when sea erosion reaches them. All of this 1.9 million dollar debacle for a few bikers and walkers.
Again, 35 years ago when I was working for the Department of Transportation Roads division, we put a bike path/walking path along this same route and over the years not one accident has happened to any of those using this path.
If the geniuses who are pushing this project wanted to make the path safer, they only needed to put the portable dividers that are there now at a fraction of the cost of $1.9 million that is being spent on this project.
There was absolutely no necessity to spend millions of dollars putting in a board walk that will likely never be removed. Plus the Hawaiian nation would not be protesting this nonsensical project by infringing on their sacred burial grounds.
Is there no one running this government of ours with brains that common sense that can step in and stop this madness?
We have 6.8 miles completed of this red herring so let’s just end it there and save out tax payers millions of dollars. To continue adding more debt to the trillions on the books is sheer insanity, especially for a project that will benefit so very few.

So called leaders
Mr. Mayor, city and county officials, Parks and Recreation Department: It is way past the time to make changes that is pono for the people of Kaua‘i. You have procrastinated long enough.
We were told that the bus shelters were to be erected on our island, right? Whose bright idea was it to put a bus stop in the dirt next to a fire hydrant in front of Kings Chapel in Hanama‘ulu?
There have been days I watched our kupuna waiting for the bus in the heat and rain with no protection. Chairs and benches were out there by concerned citizens. Shame on you Mr. Mayor and the DOT or whoever is responsible.
Out highways are so full of potholes, especially Kuhio Highway. From Hilo Hatties all the way to the bridge and beyond at the old Lihu‘e plantation. It’s the main part of town and nothing has been done. Procrastination again.
Last item: Mr. Mayor, for once be on the side of our people and repeal Act 55 and the PLDC. Let’s keep the big corporations and developers away before our ‘aina is gone.

Walter Lewis has Kaua‘i’s interests at heart
Over the years, the dedicated columnist, Walter Lewis has regularly expressed his views on bettering our island paradise.
Yes, there are those who look on this thoughtful person as an “outsider,” a person dedicated toward his and other “haoles” best interests.
But nothing could be further from the truth. Please, citizens, read his words of wisdom and absorb them — they are meant to better your lives and to keep Kaua‘i from becoming another O‘ahu or Maui.
Because his analytic comments are on occasion critical of our government in place, frustratingly they often do not listen or follow his suggestions and then spend large sums on consultants who flatter them and then offer the same advice as Mr. Lewis offers pro bono.
Wouldn’t it be great if we had elected officials who would seriously listen to people like Mr. Lewis and the many other intelligent people on Kaua‘i, people with fine ideas to deal with so many of our ongoing problems?

Is KPD living in the Twilight Zone?
Seriously? Is there actually a petition from our Chief of Police regarding a $10,000 purchase of two sniper rifles and $28,000 for four walkie-talkies? Why the extra walkie-talkie?
Does this have something to do with the 1950’s marijuana law that won’t be upgraded because we are so far from civilization we don’t require good sense?
How much is ammunition for these rifles? Do these walkie-talkies only talk to each other?
Did Rod Serling get re-animated, or just Walt Disney?

My apologies for road rage
I wanted to apologize for my road rage and yelling at a woman in Kapa‘a recently. I am truly sorry — there was no aloha in what I did.
Please accept my apology. There was and is no excuse even if we all know how horrible traffic has been lately on so much of the island. I will try to use more aloha in the future!
