LIHU‘E — The administration paid out $5,788.88 in settlements between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31. The settlements were related to four claims involving car accidents, according to a report recently released by County Attorney Al Castillo.
On Aug. 8, an accident in Kekaha caused James Harper’s vehicle to sustain damages to its bumper, signals, frame support, grill, hood, right fender, windshield and suspension components. The county Public Works Department was involved in the accident, although the report does not specify how.
The county paid $4,196 as a settlement to Harper on Dec. 6, according to the report.
On July 12, the windshield of a vehicle from Koga Engineering & Construction was damaged by a tree branch sticking out onto Maluhia Road at the Tree Tunnel. The county paid a $408.59 settlement on Oct. 16 related to this case.
On July 17, a tree branch damaged another vehicle at the Tree Tunnel. The county on Nov. 2 paid a $407.08 settlement to James Dizol.
A rental car driven by John Wetzer was damaged by a Kaua‘i Fire Department vehicle on March 24, 2011. Twenty-one months after the accident, on Dec. 24, the county paid Avis Rent-a-Car a settlement of $777.21, according to the report.
