LIHU‘E — Team Central and Team Lihu‘e closed the Boys Division II, or players in the fifth and sixth grades, on winning notes Saturday, during the county’s youth basketball league at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Kaimani Tecson, getting high point honors for Team Central with 14 points, triggered the ride to victory in the second period, firing off two buckets to give Team Central a 6-4 lead over Papalina, whose players were strapped with foul woes.
Led by Tecson and Kaiea Miguel, who finished the day with 11 points, Team Central posted a 30-16 showing over Papalina, who got five points from Wade Pimsaguan and four points apiece from Trey Taba and Ryan Banasihan.
David Pascua, at the forefront of Team Lihu‘e scoring, continued to burn the twine, notching 18 points and getting help from Kai Villanueva (9 points) and Aizen Yamashiga (7 points) in overtaking Hanakila, 46-33 in the second Division 2 matchup.
Diego Hernandez, missing action for nearly a month, returned to the floor for Hanakila, posting 18 points to lead Hanakila, a team composed primarily of boys in the Hanalei and Kilauea areas. Hero Raza lent eight points to the effort.
Ellsworth Kaleiohi netted 10 points and Toshi Cox added eight points to account for 18 of Team Lihu‘e’s 26 points in the Division 1, or boys in the third and fourth grades, win over the Supersonics, 26-6.
Mayson Broyles, Aden Ringor and Asa Chelius each netted pairs to account for the Supersonics’ effort.
Zephyn Kaneakua ended with eight points and Tyler Hawthorne added six points to lead the Kapa‘a Warriors to a 23-8 win over Westside Basketball in the second Division 1 matchup of the day.
Barak Aviguetero topped the Westside effort on seven points.
Marissa Layosa tapped in 22 of Team Lihu‘e’s 24 points in its 24-3 win over Westside, the Westside girls getting its three marks from Braeanna Moises.
T.J. Ramos led Kaulupono with 16 points to lead its 26-9 win over Team Central in the second of two girls’ matches.
D’Anndra Helgen added six points to the victory while Team Central got pairs from Tia Fulks, Amalya Sales, Brooklyne Alayvilla and Alaysia Navor.
Karen Matsumoto of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association who helps the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation with the officiating and scoring of the youth basketball league, said Saturday marked the end of the season for the Division 2 boys.
On Monday, the Boys Division 3, or players in the seventh and eighth grades, will take the floor for the first time at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with three games.
Team Central A will take on Team Lihu‘e Black in the 6 p.m. tipoff followed by Team Central B meeting Team Lihu‘e Red at 7 p.m. Westside Basketball will take on Lepo Ula in the nightcap starting at 8 p.m.
