PUHI — Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School choir program literally took their fundraising efforts to the street Saturday.
The monthly CKMS Street Festival benefited the chorus’ efforts to raise funds for a trip to O‘ahu where they will be participating in the Hawai‘i Music Festival in the spring.
Coinciding with Valentine’s Day Thursday, the CKMS Street Festivals organizers incorporated Valentine’s into its monthly offering as choir members hosted a “Make A Valentine” station amidst colorful pink and red streamers of crepe paper and balloons.
Choir members offered up their special blend of entertainment amidst the lineup of local acts, and others were dispersed through the field of activities, games and food trucks.
Craft booths, including an innovative photo booth, lined the walls of the school’s cafeteria where patrons could browse through a variety of hand-made items including unique teacup planters, inexpensive hand-made gadgets, and even indulge in a massage.
“We also have a donations car wash coming up Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Chevron, located next to Pizza Hut at 3-3187 Kuhio Highway,” said Nina Saraos, the keyboard accompanist for the choir following the Sixth Grade Chorus presentation. “People can have their cars washed and help the kids with a donation.”
Another fundraising effort will take place Feb. 23 when the CKMS Choir hosts a pizza night at Pizza Hut.
A portion of pizzas and meals enjoyed at the Lihu‘e Pizza Hut will benefit the CKMS Choir’s fundraising efforts.
However, Saraos said in order for the choir to benefit, people need to get an application form from the choir members, or the choir which needs to be filled out and presented at the time of ordering in order for the proper crediting to be passed on to the group.
The application forms are available by calling 241-3000, ext. 320, or by email at ckms.chorus@gmail.com.
CKMS hosts a monthly street festival on the second Saturday of each month, and future events will benefit other school programs.
Jody McCune, a CKMS Street Festival volunteer and former organizer, said they are already planning to have the “Unknown Artist Fair” for an upcoming festival.
“This was a popular event we held four years ago in Kalaheo, and the county has asked if we could do it again,” McCune said. “We want to invite any local artists who are looking for the spotlight to participate. This includes people in the fine arts, performing arts, and crafts.”
Tentatively, the Unknown Artist Fair is scheduled to coincide with the April CKMS street festival and people needing more information can call Sara Tochiki at 241-3000, ext. 320.
The next CKMS Street Festival is scheduled for March 9. For more information, call Tochiki at 241-3000, ext. 320.
