HONOLULU — The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders girls basketball team dropped its semifinal matchup to Honoka‘a High School in the Hawaiian Airlines Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II State Girls Basketball Championships Thursday, which pinned Kaua‘i up against Hanalani High School of Mililani for a battle for third place Friday at the Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.
The Red Raiders came away successfully, winning 49-41 to capture third place and finish the season 10-1.
Kaua‘i’s most consistent players all season have been Kristle Henry and Casey Anacleto, and Friday was no different with Henry leading all scorers with 24 points and Anacleto adding 10.
Henry finished with 75 points over three games for a 25.00 points per game average, which was tops for any one player in the tournament, edging out Casey Poe of KS Hawai‘i who finished with a 22.66 average.
Honoka‘a, after beating Kaua‘i, found themselves in the finals against KS Hawai‘i Friday. KS Hawai‘i came away with the win 55-46 and earned the title of state champions.
The Red Raiders rolled through the KIF this season and into the state tournament undefeated before dropping the game to Honoka‘a. With both Kapa‘a and Waimea having a number of returners coming back and the Red Raiders losing Henry and Anacleto, it could make up for a very competitive division for girls basketball next season.
