KAPA‘A – Police have identified a 77-year-old Oregon man who died following a two-car collision Wednesday in Kapa‘a as Alva Jackson.
Jackson was a passenger in a Chevy HHR that was struck while attempting to make a U-turn from the northbound shoulder of Kuhio Highway, fronting the Kaiakea fire station, according to county officials.
A Ford truck heading north on the highway collided with the driver’s side of the Chevy as it entered the northbound lane.
Jackson’s 71-year-old wife, who was driving at the time of the collision, was extricated from the crushed vehicle by police and firefighters. Medics transported her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital with head injuries where she remains in good condition.
The Kaua’i Visitors Bureau is working with Life’s Bridges, a volunteer grief counseling service, to provide assistance to Jackson’s family.
The 62-year-old driver of the Ford truck did not report any injuries.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. and caused police to close Kuhio Highway in both directions, between Kawaihau Road and Mailihuna Road, causing a traffic snarl for afternoon commuters. Northbound traffic was diverted onto Kawaihau Road while southbound traffic was diverted onto Mailihuna Road during the roughly two-hour closure.
The Kuhio Highway was reopened just before 5 p.m.
