WAINIHA — Police have identified the 51-year-old Canadian visitor from Sechelt, British Columbia, who drowned in the Wainiha River Tuesday as Mark McLean.
According to a preliminary investigation, McLean was found face down and unresponsive after jumping from a platform into the shallow water below, according to county officials.
A family member contacted 911 at 4:26 p.m. and pulled the man to shore. Bystanders then began performing CPR until firefighters arrived and took over, but efforts to resuscitate McLean were unsuccessful.
Medics transported the man to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihu‘e where he was pronounced dead.
Representatives from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, is assisting McLean’s family.
This is first fresh water drowning to occur on Kaua‘i and the fifth drowning so far this year. By comparison, there were a total of two ocean drownings and two fresh water drownings on Kaua‘i in 2012.
