But Team Lihu‘e, after being held scoreless in the first two frames of the Division 2 (boys in the fifth and sixth grades) game, came up with a productive third period, notching five points, but were still down 23-5 at the half.
The squad coached by Max Manera, Theresa Gonsalves and Rafael Corpuz came off the break and bucketed another five points, but was shut down by the Team Central defense in the fifth and sixth frames for the 33-10 Team Central win.
David Pascua and Chace Baliaris netted four and three points, respectively for the Team Lihu‘e effort.
Following Miguel’s 11 points, Kaimani Tecson dropped 10 points and Justin Faidley added six points in the first of two Division 2 games.
In the second game, Hanakila’s Hero Raza finished with a game-high 20 points to lead the team comprised mainly of Hanalei and Kilauea players to a 39-37 edge over the Kamikaze, coached by Keven Hanano.
The Kamikaze stayed close through the six periods, drawing as close as a digit, 26-25, at the end of the fourth period, but Hanakila pulled away and stayed ahead.
Following Raza’s lead, Felix Cosman dropped 10 points and Jesse Zemel ended with eight points.
Travis Duran, with a big three-pointer in the fourth, topped the Kamikaze scoring with 15 points. Duran was helped by Dalson Cua adding 10 points and Kyson Ikehara adding six points.
Following three periods of deadlocks, the Westside girls, coached by Josh Burton, pulled ahead in the fourth frame and played good defense in their 14-10 win over the Team Central girls, coached by Clarence Sales.
Momilani Martins topped the Westside girls’ scoring with four points and Cori Burton added three points in the win.
Amalya Sales and Jasmyn Ballesteros topped the Team Central girls’ scoring with four points apiece.
It was a fantastic finish in the Team Lihu‘e-Kaulupono game.
With just a tick left in the game, Kaulupono’s D’Anndra Helgen fired off a shot on an inbound play to give Kaulupono, coached by Bobby Kamakele and Pedro Saligumba, the 22-21 edge at the buzzer.
After surging to an 11-6 lead at the half, Team Lihu‘e clawed back from the five-point deficit to have a chance until the final seconds.
T.J. Ramos, the younger sister of Waimea High School guard Jullynn Ramos, topped the Kaulupono scoring with 11 points, including a three-ball in the fifth period, followed by Helgen dropping five points, including the game winner.
Marissa Layosa topped the Team Lihu‘e girls’ scoring with 11 points.
Anthony Durocher topped the Kapa‘a scoring with a game-high eight points, leading the team coached by Bryan Doo, to a 16-5 win over the Westside basketball team, coached by Dino Pabre, in the first of two Division 1 (boys in the third and fourth grades) games.
Sammy Mokuahi, Chandler Medeiros, Kelson DeSilva and Lephyn Kaneakua added two points apiece for Kapa‘a.
Rylan Mizumoto-Manuel and Sylas Farias netted two points apiece to lead the Westside effort.
Luke Hunadi bucketed 15 points to lead Papalina, Division 1, to a 23-13 win over the Supersonics, who got 11 points from Mayson Broyles.
The Division 2 boys take the floor today with two games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m. when Eastside Heat tangles with Papalina, Division 2.
