HONOLULU — In honor of former state Board of Education member Alexander “Lex” Hofgaard Brodie, Gov. Neil Abercrombie ordered all national and Hawai‘i flags at state offices and agencies plus the Hawai‘i National Guard to be flown at half-mast on Saturday, the day of public memorial services.
Brodie, who was from Kaua‘i, was a former Waikiki Beach Boy and became known as the founder of Lex Brodie Tire Company in 1961 and Small Business Association of Hawai‘i in 1976. He served on the BOE from 1992 to 2003.
He died Jan. 11 on Kaua‘i at age 98.
Abercrombie said in a news release the flags were flown at half-mast as a “final ‘Thank you, very much’ to Lex Brodie.”
“Lex Brodie’s dedication to education, the community and small business helped to shape the state as we know it – as it grew from a territory to a state, and today continues toward greater potential,” Abercrombie said.
“He recognized education as a means to realize that full potential.”
