KAPA‘A — Are you an aspiring artist? Or, are you looking to get back into your old passion, but don’t know where to start?
Wendy Mackintosh is preparing to launch Monday Art SPREE, a creative support group for local artists to come and, well, SPREE — Share, Practice, Revive, Encourage and Enjoy.
Beginning Feb. 4, the group will meet every Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center.
Mackintosh said Art SPREE is open to all practicing artists, “used to do” artists and aspiring artists, and perfect for those feeling stuck, tired or uninspired.
“People that want to get into it and get that inspiration going,” she said.
While there will be no formal instruction, the sessions will offer artists a weekly opportunity to develop their own skills and share with others committed to the same goals.
Encourage and be encouraged, Mackintosh said.
Artists must bring their own materials to work on new or ongoing projects. Materials may include acrylics, oils, watercolors, collage or mixed media. Wax crayons, pencils or an ordinary black pen will work just fine for beginners.
Mackintosh said the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center offers a quiet, concentrated and creative studio atmosphere, with lots of table space, light and running water.
“I’m happy to start with a small group,” she said. “(But) I think it would be really beneficial to loads of people.”
In addition to materials, participants are encouraged to bring ideas and any samples of current or past work.
The group is free, but donations of paper and materials for fellow artists are welcome.
“Our aim for the Monday Art SPREE is just to have fun and let the creativity flow, do ‘our own thing’ or experiment with different media,” Mackintosh wrote in an email. “This is for fun and joy, not a competition.”
