Kaua‘i Community College will host the 27th annual American Culinary Federation Breakfast fundraiser on Feb. 17 from 7 to 11 a.m. Eggs Benedict, omelets cooked to order, carved grilled beef teriyaki, pancakes, fresh fruits and delectable pastries will be prepared by KCC culinary students, chefs from around the island, and the KCC culinary faculty (shown in photo). Intermediate ceramics students in the Art Department will have their wares on sale at the event as part of the “things happening at KCC” booth. Tickets are $15 in advance ($18 at the door) for adults and $5 for children ages 5-10 (children under 5 free). Tickets are available at the KCC cafeteria, Mark’s Place in Puhi, Kalaheo Coffee, Kaua‘i Coffee Visitor Center, Fish Express, Koloa Fish Market, Pono Market and Sole-Mates. All proceeds go toward scholarships and equipment for the culinary students at KCC.
KCC Chef Martina Hildorfer comments, “The event has just grown and grown since it was started 27 years ago by (former KCC Chef) Clarence Nishi. We’re expecting over 2,000 people to attend throughout the morning. The American Culinary Federation is our largest donor of monies for equipment and repairs, and we’re very appreciative of what they do for our students. Students of Instructor Becky Santos’s Accounting 124 class have volunteered to help the Kapa’a Middle School 8th grade with its plans to visit O‘ahu colleges and universities in April 2013. Becky’s students hope to raise funds for the middle school trip and also spread the entrepreneurial spirit by joining with their younger counterparts at the middle school in selling chocolate chip/mac nut cookies from Passion’s Bakery in Wailua. Please support this worthwhile project!
The KCC Financial Aid Office has received a federal GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grant to fund a new outreach activity for the campus. They will be holding a “FAFSA Feed Day” on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the OCET Computer Lab, Room 104A. The goal for this event is to increase financial aid application awareness and the number of students who apply for financial aid. Current and prospective students and community members are welcome to attend. Students can stop by OCET Room 104A on Wednesday and receive assistance with completing their Financial Aid Form. They also can grab a slice of pizza for getting “their slice of the (financial aid) pie.” For more information, contact Rebecca Thompson at 245-8384.
KCC student Lisa Rapozo received this year’s Student Employee of the Year Award, which is given annually in recognition of outstanding service to the college. Lisa works as a senior mentor for the Wai‘ale‘ale Project, a scholarship program on campus, and was nominated for her contributions to supporting students in the program during their first year at college. Congratulations, Lisa!
Focus on Faculty
English Department Instructor James Lee grew up in a small farming community along the border of California and Mexico. He attended University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in ethnic literature. He began his graduate studies in the Asian American Studies program at UCLA with an emphasis in Asian American Literature, but he eventually completed his master’s degree of English at Northern Arizona University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies, and he briefly attended seminary. James has taught English in higher education for over 15 years. He enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and drinking Earl Grey tea over a good book every now and then.
Assistant Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Candace Tabuchi received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UH-West O‘ahu and her MBA through the Shidler College of Business at Manoa. After a career in hospitality spanning almost 25 years, Candace decided to move into the educational field. She brings with her experience in the front and back of the house, and in hotel and condominium management. As the Program Coordinator of the Hospitality and Tourism program and past Division Chair for the Business Education Division, Candace enjoys the opportunity to nurture and educate future “hospitalitarians.” As part of her commitment to reach a wider audience, Candace taught an accelerated tourism-related course at Shanghai Normal University in December 2012. During the summer, Candace enjoys traveling with her husband, Les, to various global destinations. Her goal is to travel to every continent on Earth!
