The Kapa‘a High School girls soccer team is seeded No. 2 in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Girls Soccer State Championships, Division II which starts Wednesday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
The Warriors, earning the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls championship by winning the playoff against Kaua‘i last week, will open during the quarterfinals Thursday, facing the winner of the match between Nanakuli and Honoka‘a high schools. Nanakuli and Honoka‘a are scheduled to play Wednesday, according to an announcement by the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association.
Kaua‘i High School, the KIF runner-up, will also be in the state championship for Division II following its 3-0 win over Sacred Hearts Academy Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
Following a quick goal from Jannin Hashizume in the seventh minute, the Red Raiders built on the 1-0 lead with a pair of second half goals, Hashizume’s second goal coming at the 64th minute, followed two minutes later by a goal from Alyssa “Malu” Vegas, who beat out the Sacred Hearts defender up the middle.
Kaua‘i High School will open at the state championships against Seabury Hall Wednesday in a 3 p.m. matchup. If successful, the Red Raiders will advance to face No. 4 seed Radford in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
A successful run by the KIF teams will find them facing each other for the state Division II title Saturday at 5 p.m.
Top seed for Division II is the Mid Pacific Owls, who defeated Sacred Heart last week, sending Sacred Hearts to meet Kaua‘i in the play-in game.
Kapa‘a holds the second seed with Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy getting the No. 3 seed, followed by Radford.
Other teams participating in the Division II state tournament include Kamehameha Schools-Big Island, Leilehua, Kalaheo and Makua Lani.
‘Iolani High School is the top seed for the Division I followed by Mililani, Kamehameha Schools-Maui and Konawaena from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation earning the No. 4 seed.
Other teams participating in the Division I field include King Kekaulike, Moanalua, Kaiser, Waianae, Kealakehe, Kahuku, Punahou and Pearl City high schools.
The Division I championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
