PUHI — Mondays and Fridays are technically “breakfast all day” menus at the Kaua‘i Community College cafeteria.
“Omelets are part of the practical tests for the pre-culinary students,” said Chef Mark Oyama, a KCC culinary instructor. “These are students who are ‘trying out’ to see if they like the culinary experience ahead of the actual culinary arts curriculum. It’s kind of like an exploratory course where students can get the feel for culinary.”
During the days when the grill and short order lunch items are available from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., diners can order omelets, eggs to order, choice of breakfast meat, rice, toast, or hash browns, and loco moco.
Short order lunch items include pasta to order, hamburger, cheeseburgers, fries and a daily special off the grill.
This preparation readies the students — currently about 15 are enrolled in the pre-culinary course —for the 27th annual American Culinary Federation breakfast fundraiser, which will be held on Feb. 13 from 7 to 11 a.m. on the grounds of the KCC campus in Puhi.
The pre-culinary students, who will be joined by culinary arts students and ACF chefs from some of Kaua‘i’s finest restaurants and resorts, will serve people from a menu which includes Eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage, ham, steamed rice, hash browned potatoes, cooked-to-order omelets, carved grilled teriyaki beef, pancakes, pastries, and an assortment of fresh fruits. Kaua‘i Coffee, assorted Meadow Gold juices and milk and Kaua‘i Springs will water help wash everything down.
Described as “Kaua‘i’s biggest and best brunch” by Chef Martina Hilldorfer, an instructor with the KCC culinary arts program, diners can enjoy their morning meal with entertainment from island-style entertainers, and, following the meal, enjoy some of the special exhibits and events put on by KCC.
Tickets for the once-a-year breakfast is $15 in advance, or $18 at the door for adults.
Children between 5 to 10 years old are $5 with keiki under 5 years old are admitted free.
Tickets can be found at the KCC cafeteria, or at the Kalaheo Coffee House, the Kaua‘i Coffee Visitor’s Center, Koloa Fish Market, Fish Express in Lihu‘e, Pono Market in Kapa‘a, and Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering in Puhi.
