HONOLULU — For the second time in just over one week, a fiber optic line belonging to Hawaiian Telcom was cut near the Honolulu Airport viaduct.
Hawaiian Telcom confirmed that one of its fiber optic cables was cut around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The vandalism occurred in the vicinity of the Jan. 15 fire that burned cables belonging to Hawaiian Telcom and knocked out service to around 10,000 customers on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i for an entire day.
The impact to customers has been determined to be not as widespread as during last week’s incident. Service for customers on Kaua‘i was reportedly not affected.
“Kaua‘i was not affected,” said to Senior Manager Ann Nishida-Fry of Hawaiian Telcom Corporate Communications. “Hawaiian Telcom customers were not affected, but (in Honolulu) some wholesale carriers that were, and if they had any lines that serve Kaua‘i, there is a possibility.”
The wholesale carriers could be wireless companies or other services, Nishida-Fry said.
According to a Hawaiian Telcom press release, personnel were on site assessing the damage. Law enforcement is also investigating the incident.
