LIHU‘E — The Polar Plunge is coming to Kaua‘i Feb. 2 at the Kapa‘a Beach Park starting at 9:30 a.m.
Described as Special Olympics Kaua‘i’s “coolest” fundraiser, individuals and teams, along with Special Olympics Kaua‘i athletes and other community members, will experience both “heartwarming and bone-chilling extremes” while taking the plunge down a 22-foot slide into an icy pool.
A $75-pledge minimum is the price to become a Polar Plunger and can be done individually or collectively as a team.
The pledge includes the official Polar Plunge T-shirt and bragging rights over others who wouldn’t do it.
For those who don’t know how to handle the chill, there is a “Too Chicken to Plunge” option which allows funds to be raised for Special Olympics Kaua‘i and participating in the day’s events — all from the safety of the “chicken coop.” People whose calendar is overflowing on Feb. 2 are still allowed to be part of the action by contributing to help Special Olympics Kaua‘i.
Plungers are able to create their own Plunge Web page for friends, family and co-workers to visit and donate online.
This is done through firstgiving.

“When you take the plunge, you’ll be helping us provide year-round training and athletic competition to nearly 100 athletes of all ages on our island of Kaua‘i,” said Jocelyn Barriga, the Special Olympics Kaua‘i coordinator.
“Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self image.” Visit www.firstgiving.com/SpecialOlympicsHawaiiAreaPrograms/polar-plunge-kauai-2013 for more information or to sign up.
