Sorry for your kid, but…
I am a little disturbed by the story on Dustin McDonald’s child (“A lurker in the sky,” Jan. 20) and the ill effects of chimney smoke. First how does one spend his whole life savings and then immediately buy another house? And why would you not investigate your neighborhood?
I have lived all over the Eastside and South shore and never once did I even notice a chimney or yard burning. Why not create an HRS against Pele for all the vog?
What I’m trying to say is I feel for the child but this parent is trying to make everyone but himself conform to fit his needs and that’s not right.
He is making a huge mountain out of an ant hill.

East Coaster appreciates help
Having arrived on the island the day before, I was surprised to see the article “Kaua‘i Red Cross volunteer helps out storm-ravaged East Coast” (A1, Jan. 21).
While my family was not affected, we had many friends who lost everything in Super Storm Sandy. The efforts of others helped us through this difficult time. This East Coast man wants to say thanks for coming to help and for caring. It is people such as Lorelei Armstrong and the others from Hawai‘i who came that inspire me to do better.

Deja vu to you
Yes, Mr. Rosen (Sun., Jan. 20 “Deja Vu, the trail is good for you”), I will continue my quest to find out why there are so many unanswered questions about this multi use white elephant.
You and others who feel that, “the multi use trail is the best use of taxpayer monies ever on Kaua‘i” are living in a dream world.
The heart of my questioning this path is continually ignored by you and other proponents of it. How can this path be costing $5.2 million per mile to build whereas our county roads and our new 2.1 mile highway are costing a fraction of that?
Why are the pushers of this path on record as stating that the 23.6 miles (if ever completed) will cost $50 million whereas 23.6 x $5.2 million is $122.7 million? Why the continual misinformation about cost, location etc.? Had the path gone on the Wailua Beach as first proposed (stopped by protesters), it would now be in the ocean.
You say the path’s intended use is an alternate to get from point A to point B, for physical therapy time, tourism and an alternative way to get around the island during emergencies.
People can get all the exercise they need in their own neighborhoods and don’t need a multi million dollar path.
And how would a 6.8 mile path allow people to get around the island in an emergency — no motorized vehicles allowed on it, even if it were finished.
Glad you agree that we do need more roads on Kaua‘i. We do not need more paths at a cost of millions of dollars to add to our 16 trillion dollar debt but we do need more alternate roads.
You may believe that 94.5 percent of our population is in favor of this “federally funded trail system” but you conveniently leave out that our local tax dollars fund $1 million of every $5 million spent. And I said that one percent use it, not approve of it even though I will take my numbers over yours.
Deja Vu.

Deja vu, this trail’s for you
Mr. Rosen, regarding your recently expressed antipathy towards Mr. Mickens personally (Jan 20, “Deja vu, the trail is good for you”), and regarding the multi-use path in general, I have an offer for you.
I’ll pay you $100 if you will meet me at The Garden Island newspaper building and provide a video, a written correspondence from a County official, or other physical evidence that any County official ever said that “the multi-use trail was never intended for the businessman carrying a briefcase walking or cycling to work. The intention is for an alternative means of not only getting from point A to Point B, but for (recreation/emergency).”
I’ll pay you $100 for proof that any County official ever said the path was not justified as a commuter corridor, but instead justified primarily for recreation. Maybe you can donate the $100 to citizen Carvalho’s household budget because those dang nitpickers shut down the free gas pump your letter once said the Office of the Mayor deserves.
It might be fascinating for you to attend a Council meeting. I look forward to hearing your opinions next time funding the path is on the Council’s agenda.

The media is brain dead
News alert all over the media, “Flu kills 27 people…” Other news: College football star Manti Te’o confesses about fake girlfriend… The news today is not news, it’s just tabloid journalism at an all-time low.
The media is making it seem bigger than it is. Every year people die of the flu, specifically the elderly, it’s nature’s way. The media has become brain dead with reporting on things like Manti Te’o’s fake girlfriend and the flu virus killing people. It kills every year. 27 people dead is a low percentage when compared to the U.S. population, and remember most of those are the elderly.
A cartoon I recently encountered said it all, Lance Armstrong confessed to Oprah that he was actually Manti Te’o’s fake girlfriend.
