Kaua‘i’s American Red Cross will be holding volunteer disaster training, Feb. 1 through 3 in Lihu‘e.
Training will open on Feb. 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., while the Feb. 2 and 3 sessions take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“When I first took office, there was a wait list of volunteers who needed disaster training,” said Keri Russell, the American Red Cross, Kaua‘i county director. “This will address that situation, but we still need more volunteers.”
Russell said anyone wishing disaster training to become a volunteer can pre-register via the American Red Cross online application, or call the American Red Cross office at 245-4919 for more information.
The American Red Cross branch on Kaua‘i works tirelessly to help when disaster strikes, or when someone needs the comfort of a helping hand, Russell said in an email.
The Red Cross provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families, and provides training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
In 2012, the Red Cross on Kaua‘i helped 82 individuals recover from disasters and begin rebuilding their lives. It opened four shelters due to flooding, housing 60 people, and provided free disaster training for local volunteers.
Across the country, the American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters annually.
It provides approximately 400,000 services to military members, veterans and civilians, and trains more than seven million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills each year.
