WAIMEA — Kaua‘i High School swimmer Yasmine Ware added three more state swims to her collection, the Kaua‘i High School girls added a relay state swim, and Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swimmers marked 12 state consideration swims Saturday at the Waimea Swimming Pool.
In the process of collecting more state qualifying swims, Ware, a sophomore, broke a KIF record and helped the Kaua‘i Girls 400-yard Freestyle relay team break another record.
Ware swam the anchor leg for the Girls 400-yard Freestyle Relay team who touched at 3:50.09, breaking the record it set on Jan. 7, 2012 by more than a second (3:51.86).
Kate Machorek, who finished the Saturday meet with four consideration swims, opened the team followed by Sophie Britzmann, Kaitlin Santos and Ware.
Ware broke the KIF record in the Girls 200- yard Individual Medley, touching at 2:11.51, nearly three seconds ahead of her seeded 2:14.93 swim and the KIF record of 2:14.40, which she set last season.
The sophomore also pocketed state swims in the 100-yard Freestyle (54.14) and the 100-yard Backstroke (59.41), breaking the under-a-minute mark.
Ware’s teammate, Machorek, also a sophomore, pocketed consideration swims in the girls’ 200-yard Freestyle (2:02.79) and the 100-yard Freestyle (57.87), in which she finished second to Ware. Her third consideration swim came in the girls’ 50-yard Freestyle (25.70), an event where her consideration swim topped the event over Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka of Kapa‘a High School, who also picked up a consideration swim at 26.06.
Stark-Kinimaka, a Kapa‘a High School junior, also finished No. 3 in the girls’ 100-yard Freestyle, getting a consideration swim at 58.26.
Maluhia swam the anchor leg for the Kapa‘a girls’ 200-yard Freestyle Relay team which opened with Mainei Aloha Kinimaka followed by Maria Fish, Abi Stein. They earned a consideration swim, touching the wall at 1:53.42.
Bryson Baligad pocketed two more consideration swims on the boys’ side. The Kapa‘a High School sophomore touched at 22.95 for a consideration in the boys’ 50-yard Freestyle and 5:14.81 for a consideration in the boys’ 500-yard Freestyle.
He shared the limelight with Island School’s Quinn Hannah-White who marked the first consideration for the Voyagers with the No. 2 finish at 5:16.02.
Baligad swam the No. 3 leg in the boys’ 200-yard Medley Relay team, who finished first and notched a consideration swim at 1:57.99.
Swimming on the team are Kai Haughland, Micah-Kamuela Nobriga-Ferris, Baligad and Don Maddock.
The second place finisher, the Kaua‘i High quartet of Tyler Elwin, Kainoa Matsumoto, Jacob Peck and Riley Young, touched at 2:00.89, surpassing the consideration standard of 2:01.79 by nearly a second.
Baligad also swam the anchor leg for Kapa‘a in the boys’ 200-yard Freestyle for the final consideration swim of the day. He was joined by Maddock, Iona Loi, Haughland and Baligad, touching at 1:42.07, more than four seconds ahead of the Waimea team (1:46.61) of Keenan McCracken, Alex Hashimoto, Erik Siles and Michael Kocher.
The KIF swim meet moves to the Kapa‘a pool on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
