LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a High School varsity boys soccer team registered a 5-0 win over Island School to clinch the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys’ soccer title Saturday at the Island School.
Over at the Vidinha Stadium, the Kaua‘i High School girls drew a step closer to the title following its 4-1 win over Waimea High School.
“Kapa‘a High School girls are watching this game with great interest,” said Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i athletic director, following the victory where Alyssa “Malu” Vegas set the pace with two goals.
“We need at least a tie Wednesday (against Kapa‘a) to clinch.”
Madison Moore, the sparkplug midfielder for Island School, drew a yellow card for Delaying Restart, the only recorded activity in the 0-0 stalemate against the Kapa‘a JV girls at the Island School fields in an exhibition game.
Red Scovel, Wailana Gandeza and Kaylee Balbarino found the net for scores in the Kaua‘i JV girls’ 3-0 win over the JV Menehune.

Byron Freitas Jr. scored two goals, one coming early in the game for the 1-0 halftime lead.
Freitas added another goal in the 45th minute and Acetyn Emayo topped the win with his goal in the 71st minute.
At Island School, Kapa‘a’s boys opened the day’s action with Daniel Alonzo leading the Warriors’ attack with two goals, Michael Alonzo, Joshua Cram and Austyn Carvalho-Toloia each adding nets in the 5-0 win.
At Vidinha Stadium, Vegas’ two first-half goals gave Kaua‘i a 2-0 lead at the half, her first goal coming after beating out the Waimea goalkeeper at the goalmouth at the 15th minute. She found the net again seven minutes later.
Coming out of the half, Waimea had a golden opportunity to score within five minutes of play when its shot from the right pocket was defended by the Kaua‘i goalkeeper, who was able to boot it out of the left corner. The resulting corner kick was booted out of the danger zone.
Cascade Mayer went to the pocket for Kaua‘i’s third score, which came in the 46th minute.
Waimea was able to get on the board in the 58th minute when Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeier, playing strong defense for Waimea in the first half, was moved up for the score.
