Kaulu Rittmeister and Eli Unotoa marked 14 points apiece to lead Eastside Heat to a 42-29 win over Hanakila, Division 2, in one of three games played Saturday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
In the second contest, another Division 2 matchup, Hunter Yoshioka, Jaron Ruiz-Acantilado and Kaimani Tecson each pocketed six points to lead Team Central to a 34-15 win over the Kamikaze, who got eight points from Takeshi Komar and four from Kampbell Hanano.
The final game, a Division 1 (boys in the third and fourth grade), became an exhibition match won by Kapa‘a, 2-0 after Hanakila, Division 1, could not field enough players at the start.
“Hanakila only had four players, so we had an exhibition game between Bryan Doo’s Kapa‘a team and the Hanakila four boys, plus Hero Raza from the Division 2 team,” said Karen Matsumoto, the scorekeeper from the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association who helps the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation with the league. “Dave Simon coaches the Division 2 Hanakila boys and is supposed to coach the younger Division 1 team as well. He said one of the boys was one a trip and they were unable to reach the other two boys.”
In the opening match, Aidan Offley helped the Eastside Heat’s win with an eight-point contribution.
Diego Hernandez topped the Hanakila scoring with 10 points followed by Felix Cosman and Chanson Hawelu, who added six points each.
“Dave is a good coach, and appears to be trying very hard to get the teams going,” Matsumoto said. “Coaching these age groups takes a lot of patience and hard work.”
