PUHI — The Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Street Festival resumed its monthly offering Saturday following the winter break in Puhi.
“We have the regular (food) vendors, and a few new ones for this event,” said Kevin Matsunaga, the media program instructor. “We also added a few other things which worked during the breakfast which was held in conjunction with the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.”
Those included the expansion of the keiki activities, including the popular face-painting manned by parent volunteers and students, as well as a handful of crafters who have been loyal to the CKMS craft fair offerings.
“We have to add more activities so people have things to do,” Matsunaga said. “We also have the CKMS PTSA selling cold drinks and in addition to the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club with Chef Guy Higa coming in for the first time, we also have the Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID College Readiness System, people doing hot chocolate and other snacks, and our own CKTV parents offering saimin.”
Chef Rafael Camarillo of the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach said he was looking for the kalua curry from the Hanalei Taro lunchwagon, one of the original vendors at the street fair.
Unfortunately, the vendor said he had some when he started out in the morning, but sold out at the Kaua‘i Community Market before getting to the CKMS.
Matsunaga said the next CKMS Street Festival will be held on the second Saturday in February to benefit the CKMS Choir program.
