LIHU‘E — An off-duty Kaua‘i firefighter helped a 21-year-old man from Santa Barbara, Calif., who was swept out to sea fronting Lumaha‘i Beach, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blaine.
On Saturday, the off-duty firefighter saw the man in distress. He swam out to the man and stabilized him by providing a boogie board for support.
The firefighter stayed with the swimmer until a lifeguard aboard a Jet Ski arrived to transport the man and the firefighter to Wainiha Bay, where Engine 1 personnel awaited, Blane said.
Medics then transported the male visitor to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.
Fire officials estimate the waves to be approximately 6 feet at Lumaha‘i Saturday.
