LIHU‘E — Five Kaua‘i residents have been selected to appear on the ballot for the board of the Kaua‘i Island Utilities Cooperation.
There are three director positions open for 2013 on the nine-member board.
The five nominees selected to appear on the March 23 ballot include Carol Bain, John “Jack” Benzie, Stewart “Stu” Burley, Allan Smith and Jan TenBruggencate.
Qualified KIUC members are still eligible to run for the board.
Bain, Smith and TenBruggencate are currently members of the KIUC board, along with Karen Baldwin, Patrick Gegen, David Iha, Calvin Murashige, Teofilo “Phil” Tacbian and Peter Yukimura.
Nominees were selected in accordance to KIUC’s by-laws. KIUC by-laws stipulate board nominees be selected by an appointed nominating committee.
That committee is chaired by Iha, who is secretary of the KIUC board, who serves along with Alfred Laureta, Amy Maeda, Michael Murakoshi and Mark Tanaka.
Those interested in running for the board can be nominated by collecting 35 signatures or more from current KIUC customers, along with submitting a finished Member Petition that includes a candidate’s statement.
The petition and signatures are due to the nominating committee no later than 4 p.m. Feb. 1.
All candidates with valid petitions will be placed on the ballot for the March 23 election.
