LIHU‘E — Neither wind, nor rain can slow the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swimmers who picked up five new qualifying swims and three consideration swims Saturday at the Kaua‘i High School pool.
Coming on the heels of the KIF Swimming opener last week when two KIF records fell, perhaps it was the weather which slowed the swimmers just enough to keep records intact.
Yasmine Ware and Kate Machorek, both sophomore swimmers for Kaua‘i High School, and Bryson Baligad of Kapa‘a High School were the leaders, Ware and Machorek each picking up two qualifying swims while Baligad added three more consideration time standards to his collection.
Machorek opened the Girls’ 400-Yard Freestyle relay team and Ware anchored the team, getting strong swims from Sophie Britzmann and Kaitlin Santos to earn a qualifying berth on its 3:52.87 swim, chopping lots of time off its seeded swim of 5:09.63 and coming just about a second short of the KIF record set in 2012.
Similarly, Ware, in getting a qualifying swim in the Girls’ 200-Yard Individual Medley, touched the wall at 2:14.93, just .53 second short of her own record in the event.
Ware’s second qualifying swim came in the Girls’ 200-Yard Breaststroke where she touched first at 1:10.04, ahead of Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka (1:26.18) and Maria Fish (1:26.98), both of Kapa‘a High School.
Machorek picked up her first qualifying swim in the Girls’ 500-Yard Freestyle, touching at 5:25.37, taking off nearly nine seconds off her seeded swim of 5:34.28.
Coming on the heels of that swim, Machorek pocketed her second qualifying swim of the day in the Girls’ 100-Yard Backstroke, touching the wall at 1:04.08, more than a second off her seeded swim of 1:05.21.
Baligad picked up consideration time standards in the 50-Yard Freestyle (23.07), the 100-Yard Freestyle (51.40) and the 100-Yard Backstroke (59.18) where he was challenged by Island School’s Quinn Hannah-White in all three events. Hannah-White had to settle for second place in all three events.
The KIF swim continues Saturday, moving to the Waimea Swimming Pool where the first events hit the water at 10 a.m.
