PO‘IPU — Opponents of genetically modified organisms are getting creative with their stance against GMOs.
A caller to The Garden Island Thursday afternoon said that the words “NO GMO!” were painted in two locations on the Po‘ipu Bypass Road, approximately one mile apart.
One set was by a fruit stand near Po‘ipu Road, and the second set was about a mile south near the old Koloa Sugar Mill road.
The letters were stenciled in and paint was used to make the marks permanent.
The caller also alerted Kaua‘i Police Department, and two officers investigated the scene.
They took photos of the markings and searched the surrounding brush for any signs of evidence.
The letters were small and the caller said he had already driven on the road once and was on his way back from a recycling center when he noticed the markings in the southbound lane.
Stenciling letters on a public roadway may be in violation of Chapter 710 of Hawai‘i Revised Statutes regarding offenses against public administration, in addition to statutes on criminal damage to property. The offenses range from petty misdemeanor to felonies.
