WAIMEA — Nevaeh Smith, 4, has a new baby brother for New Year.
Born at 7:31 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea, Nevaeh’s brother was the first baby born on Kaua‘i in 2013 and the second child of Jeremy and Amanda Smith of Po‘ipu.
“He still doesn’t have a name,” said Amanda. “We’re still discussing that.”
Baby Smith weighed in at exactly 8 pounds and measured 21 inches and received a congratulatory New Year’s gift basket from the nurses at the KVMH Family Birth Center.
“It’s been quite a while since we got the New Year’s baby,” said Naomi Almodova, one of the nurses on duty Tuesday. “Did the G.N. Wilcox Memorial Hospital have a baby yet?”
A call Tuesday morning, after 7:30 a.m., to the Wilcox Hospital’s nursing station revealed they had a patient in labor, but no baby.
Jeremy said they came into KVMH Monday night at midnight, with daughter Nevaeh accompanying the family.
“She stayed until about 3 a.m. before heading back to home with grandma,” Jeremy said. “She wanted to stay.”
Grandma, Rebecca Smith of Kaua‘i Photographics, said she stayed with Nevaeh until after the birth.
“This is my second grandchild,” Rebecca said. “I have one girl, Nevaeh, and now, a boy. How special.”
