LIHU‘E — Hundreds of people flocked to Kalapaki Beach in Lihu‘e Christmas Eve to prepare for Santa’s annual visit.
Each year, the sound of the conch shell announces Santa’s early stop on Kaua‘i. But instead of riding in on his trusty sleigh, the bearded fellow arrives in a unique, double-hulled canoe, escorted by a crew of paddling elves.
Despite light rain, this year’s celebration drew a massive crowd to the area in front of the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club. With cell phones and cameras in hand, the crowd surrounded Santa as he made his way onto the shore to hear Christmas wishes, take photographs and hand out gifts of candy.
After approximately an hour, Santa and his crew paddled back out to sea, headed for the North Pole.
