ANAHOLA — Singing, dancing and a potluck of homemade foods will usher in 2013 at the Kaua‘i New Year’s Community Brunch.
Started more than a decade ago in a private home, the gathering has gained in popularity over the years.
By last year, organizers relocated it to the lush grassy area at the Anahola Taro Patch and more than 700 people attended the event, which brought several cultures and communities together in celebration.
The 13th annual Kaua‘i New Year’s Community Brunch and Celebration Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Anahola Taro Patch, located on Kiko‘o Loop Road, across from Whaler’s General Store and the post office.
Featuring a healthy potluck, attendees are asked to bring either an entree, vegetable side dish or dessert.
Everyone is being asked to bring recipe cards for the dishes they bring as organizers are building a Kaua‘i 2012 Community Cookbook using recipes from this brunch.
Local artists and musicians — including Puna Dawson, the Locey Family Hula, New Goddess Chant Choir, Omashar, John Dumas and Janet Carafa — will be entertaining during the brunch with a blend of Hawaiian, folk and contemporary music.
Love Tribe will also host a drum circle, so everyone is asked to bring a drum or two to join in.
A family-friendly event, there will be special activities for keiki throughout the afternoon.
Along with being a zero waste and zero vendor event, no drugs or alcohol are allowed. In addition, there is a no pet policy at the Anahola Taro Patch.
Parking assistance and disabled/special needs transportation is available at the Anahola Taro Patch.
While some seats will be available, plan to bring your own chairs or mats on which to sit.
Cost is $15 in advance or $20 the day of the brunch. Children 12 and under are free. The admission price is tax deductible through the Aloha Foundation.
Tickets are available at Harvest Market Hanalei, Papaya’s in Kapa‘a, Princeville Wine Market, Duane’s Ono-Char Burgers in Anahola and at Vim & Vigor in Lihu‘e.
Volunteers are also needed to staff the brunch in various ways. Contact Anny at (301) 523-5711 or at abruch@gmail.com to learn more.
