KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a High School basketball program will host its Kapa‘a holiday basketball tournament starting Thursday with two games starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Bernice Hundley Gym located on the Kapa‘a High School campus.
Headed by coach Nouveau Naumu, the Waimea High School Menehune will open against the host Kapa‘a Warriors coached by Phil Baclayon.
The second game, tipping off at 7 p.m., will feature Hawai‘i Baptist Academy Eagles of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu against the Kohala Cowboys of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
Deren Oshiro coaches the HBA Eagles, which will be making its second trip to Kapa‘a. The Eagles placed fourth during the 2008 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state tournament.
Don Fernandez is at the helm of the Kohala Cowboys, which will be returning to Kapa‘a for the third time.
The Cowboys finished fourth in the HHSAA state tournament in 1979 and 1984 as Division I contenders. In 2007, the Cowboys finished in the runner up berth for Division II before slipping to third place in Division II in the 2009 season.
Kapa‘a, host for the tournament, finished third in Division II during the 2010 HHSAA state tournament.
Friday, the HBA Eagles tip off against Waimea starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Kohala Cowboys matching up against the Kapa‘a Warriors at 7 p.m.
The tournament wraps up Saturday morning when the host Kapa‘a Warriors tip off against the HBA Eagles starting at 10 a.m. followed by the Waimea Menehune going up against the Kohala Cowboys starting at 11:30 a.m.
