LIHU‘E — Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced today at 2 p.m. that Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz will fill the vacancy left by the late Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawai‘i.
Abercrombie picked up Schatz from a a list of three names sent by Democratic Party’s central committee. The list also included U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, D-Hawai‘i and state Department of Land and Natural Resources Deputy Director Esther Kia‘aina, who had an unsuccessful run for the U.S. House in the last elections.
Abercrombie’s pick bypasses Inouye’s last wish, which was for Hanabusa to replace him.
