LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School varsity boys soccer team wrapped up its soccer Saturday by converging at the lobby of Wilcox Memorial Hospital to sing Christmas carols for the residents of the Garden Isle Healthcare long term facility.
Mark Brandeburg, the Red Raiders soccer coach, said the team does this as a service project annually.
Sports teams and programs, punctuating its programming with the winter break and holidays, appeared throughout the island in attire not normally donned in the different sports arenas.
The Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League associations of Kekaha and Hanapepe took to the streets of the Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade to thank the community for its support while the Waimea High School softball team took advantage of its alumni returning home from college to form a parade unit to thank its supporters.
The Menehune softball team, finishing the 2011–12 school year as the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association, Division II champions, were joined by the Menehune cheer squad, recently successfully defending its Zippy’s HHSAA Medium Division state title, in taking a break from the sports schedule to spread goodwill in the community.
